5 days before - To My Big Girl

birke` my love-
last night i was going through one of the many boxes piled up in the house and found an email that mommy & i had written to you when you were still at sally's, before we had even met.  you had sent us a card and a photo of you wearing cute skinny jeans and big thick hiking boots, just like mommy used to wear.  i loved you before i even met you.  i am honestly the luckiest mom on earth and there is not a day.... EVER.... that i don't go to sleep at night thankful that i got to be your mom.
when i stepped off the plane after an entire 23 hours of flying and i walked with the crowd of african people toward the passport control tables, i felt completely terrified and out of place, a very white face in a sea of beautiful, friendly africans.  and then i heard chanting "momma, momma, momma" and i could see sally and my children across the airport.  i impatiently waited my turn to get my passport stamped and get to you.... and sally pointed me out to you all (i was pretty easy to spot) and the chanting grew louder and i thought my heart would explode and my cheeks would pop off... my smile so big.  i made it through and the three of you ran up and hugged me and i knew i had found my home.... not in a place but in my heart.... in the faces of my three ethiopian angels....
from that moment in the airport, as we walked toward the baggage area and you kept looking up at me to make sure i was there, you have been my big girl.  i have turned to you to help me with 'the littles' since that first day and i often worry that i am giving you too much to handle, but you handle everything with such grace and such strength.
to be continued....
